Cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste

religious

The Cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste is recognizable by the two hundred eighty small stone medallions embedded into its façade, which depict a mix of biblical scenes and everyday medieval life. Located in the heart of Vieux Lyon, this cathedral serves as the seat of the Archbishop of Lyon, who holds the historic title of Primate of the Gauls. Construction began around eleven eighty on the ruins of a sixth-century church and continued for nearly three centuries, resulting in a building that blends Romanesque arches in the apse with Gothic styling in the nave.
