Rue Juiverie is a narrow, paved street in the heart of the Vieux Lyon district, recognizable by its concentrated collection of Renaissance-era urban mansions. Its name reaches back to the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, when it served as the center of a thriving Jewish community before their expulsion from the city. By the late fifteenth century, the livestock markets that once occupied the space had moved away, allowing wealthy bankers and merchants to construct the opulent residences that define the street today.
