The Ancient Theatre of Fourvière is defined by its massive, semi-circular tiers of stone seating carved directly into the hillside of Fourvière, facing toward the modern city of Lyon. Built around fifteen BC during the reign of Emperor Augustus, this structure served as a central hub for the Roman city of Lugdunum, the capital of Roman Gaul. At its peak capacity, the theatre held ten thousand spectators who gathered for comedies, tragedies, and political assemblies.
