Place Saint-Paul sits at the northern edge of the historic Vieux Lyon district, tucked between the base of Fourvière hill and the Saône river. The square is defined by the stone facade of the Église Saint-Paul, a church with origins in the sixth century that served as the center of a self-sufficient, walled community during the Middle Ages. While the district hosted merchants and craftspeople for centuries, the modern square took its current shape in eighteen seventy-six to accommodate the opening of the Gare de Lyon-Saint-Paul railway station nearby.
