The Hôtel de Ville de Lyon is distinguished by a massive, symmetrical facade that stretches between the Place des Terreaux and the Place de la Comédie. This structure, completed in sixteen seventy-two, features a central clock tower and four corner pavilions that define its rigid, formal appearance. Architects Simon Maupin and later Jules Hardouin-Mansart designed it to house the city’s administration, replacing a previous building that had become too modest for Lyon’s growing civic ambitions.
