The Young Artist Center in Penestanan sits at the heart of a village transformed by a creative experiment that began in the early nineteen sixties. Dutch painter Arie Smit, who had settled in nearby Campuan, noticed local children—many of them young duck herders—working in the surrounding rice fields. Lacking jobs and facing hardship, these children were invited to Smit’s home to borrow brushes and paints.
