The National Archaeological Museum of Naples occupies a massive, sixteenth-century palace identifiable by its grand neoclassical facade. Originally constructed to serve as a royal cavalry barracks, the building later housed the University of Naples before Charles the Third of Bourbon selected it to preserve the antiquities unearthed from the nearby volcanic ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum.
