The Fortezza Nuova, or Cittadella Nuova, is identified by the high defensive brick walls that emerge along the southern bank of the Arno River. Built starting in fourteen forty after the Florentine conquest of Pisa, the fortress was designed with wide, thick walls as one of the first in Italy capable of resisting cannon fire. It sits between the Ponte della Vittoria and the Ponte della Fortezza, marking the southeastern corner of the historic city walls.
