Piazza Garibaldi

historic

Piazza Garibaldi sits at the northern end of the Ponte di Mezzo, marked by a bronze statue of Giuseppe Garibaldi that stands slightly off-center. Created in eighteen ninety-two by the sculptor Ettore Ferrari and cast at the Crescenzi foundry in Rome, the statue depicts the leader in a life-size, anti-heroic pose. The pedestal beneath him features reliefs showing scenes from his life, including the fall of Rome and the moment he was wounded at Aspromonte before coming to Pisa for treatment.
