Piazza delle Vettovaglie is defined by an irregular quadrilateral of buildings framed by a continuous, sheltered loggia supported by sandstone columns. This space sits in the heart of Pisa, where its architecture reflects a deliberate sixteenth-century transformation under Medici rule. The site was once known as Piassa de' Porci, or Pig Square, and hosted a lively neighborhood of artisan shops and noble residences before it was reorganized to serve as the city’s primary grain market.
