The Cappella della Sacra Sindone is distinguished by its dramatic, tiered dome, a complex structure of interlocking masonry arches that rise in a series of hexagonal levels. Designed by the Theatine priest and mathematician Guarino Guarini, this masterpiece of Piedmontese Baroque was built between sixteen sixty-eight and sixteen ninety-four to house the Shroud of Turin. It sits between the Turin Cathedral and the Royal Palace, intended to create an experience of ascending from the darkness of the tomb toward the light of divine glory.
