Piazza Emanuele Filiberto is now formally known as Piazza della Repubblica, though its history remains tied to the name of the Duke of Savoy who made Turin a capital. It took its current shape in eighteen fourteen, when architect Lombardi designed it by merging three smaller squares, including the original hexagonal Piazza Emanuele Filiberto.
