Hamamatsuya

Hamamatsuya is a workshop and store in Hatajuku dedicated to the production of Hakone yosegi-zaiku, a form of traditional wooden mosaic craft. The building sits near the Honjin-ato bus stop in a village that served as a small outpost along the Tokaido road during the Edo period. You can identify the site by the active studio where artisans create geometric patterns by combining different natural woods, a practice that relies on grains and colors rather than dyes or inks.
