Kikyouya sits in the village of Hatajuku, a place once known for the travelers crossing the steep mountains of the historic Tokaido road. You can identify this shop by the traditional wooden handicrafts displayed in its windows, which focus specifically on a style called muku. Unlike other forms of marquetry where thin sheets of wood are applied to a base, this technique involves using a lathe to carve objects directly from solid blocks of wood composed of different colored pieces.
