Saiun-do appears much like an ancient pharmacy, with shelves lined with glass jars and vials containing colorful mineral and vegetable powders. This shop has provided materials for traditional Japanese painting, known as Nihonga, for well over a century. Founded in eighteen sixty-three, the business occupies a traditional house where pigments are still measured out for artists who mix them with animal glue to create their own paints.
