Yasaka Kōshin-dō is a small temple in the Higashiyama district defined by clusters of vibrant, multi-colored cloth balls that hang in thick garlands around its grounds. These spheres, known as kukurizaru, are shaped like monkeys with their hands and feet bound, a visual representation of self-control. Officially named Kongoji, the temple was established in the year nine hundred and sixty, making it one of the earliest sites in Japan dedicated to the Kōshin faith.
