Rokuharamitsuji Temple

Rokuharamitsuji Temple is marked by its striking vermillion-painted main hall, a structure that dates back to thirteen sixty-three. Founded in nine hundred fifty-one by the monk Kuya, it originally served as a place of refuge and prayer during a devastating plague that gripped the capital. Kuya, a priest known for his compassion, famously traveled the city streets pulling a cart with a statue of Kannon, chanting and offering tea to those suffering in the surrounding neighborhood.
