Ninenzaka

Ninenzaka is a narrow, stone-paved slope in Kyoto’s Higashiyama district, distinguished by its concentration of traditional wooden townhouses, or machiya. Built in eight hundred seven, it served as a pedestrian approach for pilgrims traveling to the nearby Kiyomizu-dera Temple. The street is officially recognized as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings, a status that keeps its historical character intact by excluding power lines and modern motor vehicle traffic from its path.
