Kenninji Temple

Kenninji Temple is marked by the Chokushimon Gate, a copper-plate gable structure known as the Arrowhead Gate because of the visible marks left by arrows during ancient conflicts. As the oldest Zen temple in Kyoto, it was founded in twelve hundred and two by the monk Eisai, who is credited with introducing both Rinzai Zen Buddhism and the cultivation of tea to Japan.
