Maha Bodhi Phaya is distinguished by its tall, pyramidal tower, which stands in sharp contrast to the bell-shaped stupas common throughout the Bagan plain. Built in twelve fifteen during the reign of King Htilominlo, the temple was designed as an imitation of the famous Mahabodhi Temple in Bodh Gaya, India, where the Buddha is said to have attained enlightenment.
