The Dhammayangyi Temple rises from the Bagan plain as a massive, wide structure topped by six receding terraces that give it the silhouette of an Egyptian pyramid. It is the largest temple in the area, measuring approximately seventy-eight meters on each side. Constructed of red brick, the building is famous for the precision of its masonry; legend claims that King Narathu, who ruled from eleven sixty-seven to eleven seventy, would execute workers if he could fit a needle between the bricks they laid.
