The Canterbury Provincial Council Buildings are marked by a collection of distinct stone and wooden structures that stretch along the banks of the Avon River. Built between eighteen fifty-eight and eighteen sixty-five, this is the only purpose-built provincial government complex remaining in New Zealand. The buildings were designed by architect Benjamin Mountfort in the Gothic Revival style, with each of the three construction phases reflecting the growing wealth and political ambition of the early Canterbury province.
