Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū is defined by its sweeping, curved glass facade and a large, abstract metal sculpture called Reason for Voyaging that sits on the forecourt. Opened in two thousand and three, the building occupies a site on Montreal Street and replaced the city’s older Robert McDougall Art Gallery. Its Māori name, Te Puna o Waiwhetū, honors the artesian spring flowing beneath the structure, while the second part of the name speaks to a nearby stream where stars are reflected in the water.
