The Tang Shaofu Baigong Temple stands along the historic Shantang Street, a location deeply connected to the Tang Dynasty poet and statesman Bai Juyi. The temple commemorates his time serving as the governor of Suzhou, during which he oversaw the dredging of the local river and the construction of the street itself to improve transportation and irrigation. Because of his efforts, the people of Suzhou dubbed the thoroughfare the Baigong Dike in his honor.
