People's Park is a sprawling green space in the heart of downtown Chengdu, marked by a massive, thirty-one-meter-tall stone monument that stands as a silent witness to the city's twentieth-century upheaval. First opened in nineteen eleven as Shaocheng Park, it replaced a Qing Dynasty military garrison that once housed Manchu and Mongol soldiers.
