The Potala Palace rises more than three hundred feet above the Lhasa Valley, a massive fortress of stone and wood situated on the slope of Red Hill. The structure contains two distinct sections: the central, reddish-brown Red Palace, which is dedicated to religious life, and the flanking, white-washed White Palace, which once housed the government and the living quarters of the Dalai Lamas.
