The Lukhang, or Temple of the Serpent Spirits, sits on a small island in a lake directly behind the Potala Palace. You can identify this three-story, square building by its distinctive hexagonal, Mongolian-style roof, which rises above a quiet, tree-lined pond. The lake itself is an artificial depression, created in the seventeenth century when workers excavated the earth needed to build the massive Potala Palace nearby.
