The Office of the Qing Government Resident Commissioner in Lhasa is a three-story, traditional Tibetan-style courtyard building marked by two stone lions at its entrance. Established in seventeen twenty-eight, it served as the administrative headquarters and residence for the Qing emperors' representatives, known as ambans, who oversaw Tibetan political, military, and foreign affairs. Its location near the busy Barkor street earned it the local name Chongsaikang, meaning the house that overlooks the market, as officials could observe the daily life of the city directly from the building’s south-facing windows.
