Plaza de Roma sits at the heart of Intramuros, defined by its garden layout and the presence of the Manila Cathedral, which rises immediately to its south. Historically known as the Plaza Mayor, this square once functioned as the city’s central public arena where bullfights and major colonial events took place. In seventeen ninety-seven, Governor-General Rafael Maria de Aguilar transformed the open space into a formal garden, ending its time as a site for public spectacles.
