The Escada dos Guindais is a steep, narrow stone staircase that climbs the hillside from the Ribeira district by the Douro River up toward the Batalha area. These steps are a passage through the historic heart of the city, winding past residential buildings and remnants of the medieval Fernandine Walls that once defined the city's perimeter.
