Jakubovo námestie is defined by a quiet, rectangular park that centers the square, a marked contrast to the surrounding urban density. The space takes its name from a historical Bratislava mayor named Jakub. Before the end of the nineteenth century, the area was composed entirely of orchards and gardens, and it was only toward the turn of the century that residential buildings began to frame the perimeter.
