Cafe Kumbuk is distinguished by its namesake, the Kumbuk tree, which grows across Sri Lanka and is known for providing deep shade. The cafe opened in March two thousand sixteen, born from a university project by founder Shana Dandeniya. After graduating from a London university with a degree in creative advertising, Shana returned home to Colombo with her mother, Dinali, to turn her concept into a business. They initially operated out of a location on Horton Place before moving to their current spot on Thambiah Avenue.
