Independence Square is defined by the open-sided Independence Memorial Hall, a structure recognizable by its rows of ornately molded cement columns and a traditional hipped, tiled roof. Completed in nineteen fifty-three, the hall was built to commemorate Sri Lanka’s independence from British rule, which was formally declared on February fourth, nineteen forty-eight. The site was chosen because it was the exact location where Prince Henry, the Duke of Gloucester, presided over the opening of the first Ceylonese parliament.
