The Colombo National Museum is identifiable by its grand, two-story white facade built in an Italian architectural style, set back behind a lush green lawn filled with banyan trees. Established in eighteen seventy-seven by the British Governor of Ceylon, Sir William Henry Gregory, it is the largest and oldest museum in the country. The building was constructed by the master builder Arasi Marikar Wapchie Marikar, who designed the structure to house the nation’s cultural and natural heritage.
