Independence Memorial Museum

historic

The Independence Memorial Hall is recognizable by its red-tiled roof and sixty stone columns, an architectural tribute to the Magul Maduwa, the royal audience hall of the ancient Kandyan kings. Constructed between nineteen forty-eight and nineteen fifty-three, this monument occupies the site where the Duke of Gloucester officially opened Ceylon’s first independent parliament on February fourth, nineteen forty-eight. By choosing a design that echoes the hall where local chieftains once signed away the island’s sovereignty to the British in eighteen fifteen, the building creates a symbolic circle, reclaiming a tradition of self-governance.
