Wat Ratchabophit Sathitmahasimaram Ratchaworawihan is distinguished by a gilded, forty-three-meter-tall chedi that stands at the center of a circular courtyard, a layout rarely seen in Thai religious architecture. Commissioned by King Chulalongkorn, or Rama the Fifth, in eighteen sixty-nine, the temple reflects the monarch's vision of a modernizing nation. While the exterior presents traditional, vibrant mosaic tiles and layered Thai-style roofs, the interiors of the main halls depart from local conventions. The ordination hall features pointed arches, marble floors, and decor influenced by the Italian Neo-Gothic style the king observed during his travels in Europe.
