Wat Chiang Man is distinguished by its oldest structure, the Chedi Chang Lom, where fifteen life-sized, brick-and-stucco elephants appear to carry the golden, square-based stupa on their backs. Founded in twelve ninety-six by King Mangrai, this site served as his royal residence while he supervised the creation of Chiang Mai. Because he lived in a pavilion here during the city's construction, this temple is recognized as the oldest within the old walled city.
