The Fenari Isa Mosque is recognizable by its exterior walls of alternating brick and stone bands, a defining characteristic of late Byzantine architecture in Constantinople. This building, located in the Fatih district, began as the Lips Monastery, a complex composed of two separate churches built centuries apart. The northern church dates to nine hundred seven, commissioned by the admiral Constantine Lips, while the southern church was added in the late thirteenth century by Empress Theodora as a burial site for the Palaiologos imperial family.
