The Zeyrek Cistern is a rectangular, brick-and-stone underground structure identifiable by a series of exterior niches built into its walls to withstand the pressure of the water it once held. Dating to the twelfth century, this Byzantine reservoir was a essential part of the infrastructure for the nearby Christ Pantokrator Monastery, which was founded by Emperor John the Second Komnenos and his wife, Empress Irene.
