Main Quad

The Main Quad is defined by its series of connected, buff-colored sandstone buildings, red tile roofs, and expansive arched walkways. As the oldest part of Stanford University, this complex was designed in a Richardsonian Romanesque style with California Mission influences, established to memorialize Leland Stanford Junior after his death at the age of fifteen. Its cornerstone was laid on May fourteen, eighteen eighty-seven, which would have been his nineteenth birthday.
