The Stanford Mausoleum is distinguished by the four marble sphinxes that guard its corners. Completed in eighteen eighty-nine, this structure in the Stanford University Arboretum holds the remains of Leland Stanford, his wife Jane, and their only child, Leland Junior. The family originally intended to build a grand mansion on this site, even establishing a cactus garden nearby, but they changed their plans following the death of their son from typhoid fever in eighteen eighty-four.
