Camp Fremont

In nineteen seventeen, the United States Army transformed the foothills of Menlo Park into a sprawling military base for the Great War. Over seven thousand acres were quickly developed to accommodate twenty-seven thousand soldiers and ten thousand horses. Today, remnants of this period appear in the form of occasional unexploded artillery shells unearthed in local backyards, a physical echo of the thousands of men who trained in the trenches gridded across this landscape.
