Mental Research Institute

The Mental Research Institute, now located on Oak Grove Avenue, began in nineteen fifty-eight when psychiatrist Donald deAvila Jackson founded a space to rethink how human beings behave. Jackson and his colleagues moved away from the era's focus on internal, individual trauma and instead pioneered the study of systemic, interactional processes. They viewed psychiatric symptoms not as isolated diseases, but as parts of repetitive communication patterns between family members.
