Kepler’s Books, located in the Menlo Center on El Camino Real, is recognizable by the handwritten Post-it note responses from readers that cover its interior display signs. Founded in nineteen fifty-five by peace activist Roy Kepler, the store began as an activist enterprise focused on selling affordable paperbacks. It quickly became a gathering place for local intellectuals, Stanford students, and Beat thinkers, even hosting early performances by the Grateful Dead and appearances by Joan Baez.
