The Pearl Harbor National Memorial is distinguished by a long, white, bridge-like structure that spans the submerged hull of the battleship USS Arizona. This twenty-one-acre site on the island of Oahu serves to commemorate the surprise attack on December seventh, nineteen forty-one, when Japanese forces struck the United States Pacific Fleet. The assault killed more than two thousand, three hundred military and civilian personnel, resulting in the sinking or damaging of numerous ships and aircraft, and forcing the United States to enter World War Two.
