The Old Manse

museum

The Old Manse is a two-story Georgian house built of weathered clapboard that sits on the banks of the Concord River. It was constructed in seventeen seventy for the patriot minister William Emerson, who watched the opening engagement of the American Revolution from his own fields. On April nineteenth, seventeen seventy-five, his wife, Phebe Bliss Emerson, and their children observed the battle at the North Bridge from the house's upstairs windows while the British and colonial forces clashed just one hundred and fifty yards away.
