Parc Charlevoix / Rufus-Rockhead is a quiet green space in Little Burgundy named for the man who established Montreal’s most legendary jazz club. Rufus Nathaniel Rockhead, a Jamaican-born First World War veteran, opened Rockhead's Paradise in nineteen twenty-eight at the corner of Saint-Antoine and Mountain streets. In an era when Black entrepreneurs faced significant institutional resistance, Rockhead spent eleven months campaigning for a liquor license that officials were initially unwilling to grant him.
