Lodhi Colony is characterized by its orderly grid of low-rise residential blocks featuring large, distinctive arches at the center of their walls. Built in the nineteen forties, this was the final housing project constructed by the British in India, originally designed to accommodate central government employees. Its architecture, led by architects Walter Sykes George and Robert Tor Russel, reflects a shift in colonial urban planning toward symmetry and functional living space for the staff of the Raj.
