Cemetery of Manarola

The cemetery of Manarola occupies a dramatic, panoramic position on a cape overlooking the Ligurian Sea. Like other burial grounds in the Cinque Terre, it was established outside the village center in the nineteenth century following health decrees that moved cemeteries away from populated areas. Its walls are lined with marble niches, known as loculi, which hold the remains of local residents.
