Nishiki Tenmangu Shrine is distinguished by the rows of glowing lanterns lining its entrance at the eastern end of Nishiki Market. It is dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, a ninth-century scholar and politician posthumously deified as the god of learning. Originally established in one thousand three, the shrine occupied the former residence of Michizane’s father before moving to this site in fifteen eighty-seven during the urban reconstruction of Kyoto led by Toyotomi Hideyoshi.
